Well, it is Saturday and the girls are 5 days old. What a trip this week has been. We had a check up back last Thursday for our last doctor visit and ultrasound, and everything was just as it should be. The girls were estimated to weigh 6lbs, 8oz and 6lbs, 10oz and amazingly, Olivia had flipped and was now head down. We were in great shape for a natural delivery, just like I had hoped.
Friday morning, I woke up with contractions around 2:30am and starting timing them. By 5:30 or so, they were around 5-7 minutes apart consistently so we called the doctor. She suggested we come to the hospital. We got up and dropped Jack off at daycare and away we went. Sure enough, they were 3-5 minutes apart once we got admitted and hooked up to the monitors, but a few hours later we were no further along then when we came in. Since we were still a few days shy of 37 weeks (full term for twins), they would not medically induce my labor, but they were not going to medically stop it should it start either. They gave me the option to stay and see what happens to be monitored in a hospital or head home to be comfortable. We chose to come home, knowing that we were scheduled to be induced Monday if nothing happened before then.
Mom and Abbie, my oldest niece, made it in the next morning from Florida. Still no babies.
Monday morning came, and I got up at 5:00am to call the hospital and see when they would have a bed available to put us in for our induction and hard labor began out of no where, and thankfully, the hospital had a bed ready for us immediately.
I told Brandon and mom, this was it and to get ready ASAP and in the car. My water broke on the way and we were 6-7 centimeters dilated by the time we got to the hospital at 5:45am. By 7:00, I was getting my epidural and by 7:15 was fully dilated and on our way to the operating room to deliver.
Kaitlyn Elizabeth was born at 7:41am weighing 6lbs, 7oz and 19 inches long. At 8:00am, Olivia Marie came into the world at 5lbs, 15oz and 19 3/4 inches long. She probably would have cleared the 6lb mark, but she urinated all over the nurse and the floor on her way to the scale!
They are definitely fraternal twins, each with their own personalities and looking very differently. Olivia is much more petite in all of her features and has a full head of pitch black hair. Kate has hair, but not nearly as much or as dark. Kate looks very much like Jack did when he was born and my mother says Olivia is a spitting image of me when I was born.
We were released from the hospital on Wednesday morning, even though I was having issues with my bloodwork, on the terms that I would return to the doctor's office next week for more lab work to try to determine what was going on with me.
We have been home a couple of days and are trying to settle into a routine with our new family.
